More information about RSS

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary), is a data structuring format using XML that facilitates the automated access to information contained in a website. This form of distributing content is called syndication. Its function is to display a summary or index of content published on a site, without having to visit it. Using an RSS reader (a feed reader) or a browser with one built in, new items on one or more websites can be easily and comfortably obtained, without having to visit them.

There are other content syndication formats, such as Atom, RDF, etc.

What is a feed?
A feed is a file that contains data to be shared via an RSS channel. Feeds tend to have the extensions such as .rss,.rdf or .xml.

It is s small text file in XML format, hosted on the server of the site acting as content source. Inside the file, site editors place, in an ordered and structured manner, headlines and a small description of the content that they have published or consider of interest. The most advanced versions can be accompanied by images or attached documents.

By adding feeds from your favourite sites to a program able to read them (an RSS reader), you can keep up to date with new content without having to constantly visit them.

What is an RSS channel?
An RSS channel is a link (through which data circulates) between your computer and the server for the site used to host the content. It is often used synonymously with the term RSS feed.

How can I read a feed?
Programs that read feeds are called readers or feed aggregators, and the process of adding them to an aggregator is called syndication.

You can find many free readers/aggregators on the web. Some of the most well known are FeedReader, Awasu, RssReader, RssBandit, Sage and NewsMonster. Also the Firefox and Opera browsers, the Thunderbird mail client, and an ever-greater number of programs include built in RSS feed readers.

I want to syndicate a feed
Once you have installed an aggregator, you must copy the link you find on the website you are interested in into the corresponding field in your aggregator, and follow the instructions.
