The idea of environmental education is to make people aware of the role of humanity as a species in the complex system of relationships that makes up our planet. To that end, it is essential to learn about and respect all the other living beings with which we interact, and to strive not just to avoid harming them (i.e. not to cause pollution, destroy habitats, deplete natural resources, etc.) but also to implement sustainable development systems in which, as per UN guidelines, economic development is only desirable if it brings with it human development.
