The research work conducted in URDAIBAI can be classified into three main interconnected groups, each with its subdivisions and different lines of research:

• GROUP A: "Analysis of environmental and landscape systems":
  * Study and assessment of biodiversity, landscape diversity and the perception of same.
  * Environmental disturbances. Pollution, assessment and effects. Remediation.
  * Modelling the workings of ecosystems.
  * Archaeology, history.
  
• GROUP B: "Sustainability and development":
  * Sustainability indicators.
  * Land management models.
  * Formulae for implementing a sustainable development model in the Biosphere Reserve.
  * Implementation, monitoring and assessment of management plans.
  * Heightening of public awareness with special emphasis on environmental education.
  * Social conflict resolution in environmental matters.
  
• GROUP C: "Management & administration":
  * Implementation, monitoring & assessment of management plans.
  * Heightening of public awareness with special emphasis on environmental education.
